Why maintenance pays for itself

Commercial refrigeration runs around the clock, often in places that are hard on equipment, like hot kitchens, flour-filled bakeries and busy stores with doors opening all day. Over time, coils clog, drains block, gaskets wear and small electrical faults develop. None of these are dramatic at first. The case runs a little warmer, the compressor runs a little longer and the power bill creeps up. Then one day something gives out, usually at the worst possible time.

Planned preventive maintenance deals with these problems on your schedule rather than the equipment’s. Trust Cooling provides maintenance for display cases and walk-ins across the Greater Toronto Area, alongside our installation work and 24/7 emergency support.

What a maintenance visit covers

Each visit is tailored to the equipment on site, but it typically includes:

  • Condenser coil cleaning. Removing dust, grease and debris so the system can reject heat properly. This is the single biggest factor in efficiency and compressor life.
  • Evaporator inspection. Checking the coil for ice build-up and making sure fans are running and air is moving freely through the case or room.
  • Drain lines and pans. Clearing blockages that cause leaks, ice and odours, and checking drain heaters on freezers.
  • Defrost. Confirming defrost cycles start and finish correctly and that the schedule suits how the equipment is used.
  • Door gaskets, hinges and closers. Finding tears and gaps that let warm air in all day.
  • Controls and temperatures. Checking controller settings, comparing displayed temperatures against independent readings and testing alarms.
  • Electrical connections. Looking for loose or overheating connections and checking how the compressor and fans are drawing current.
  • Refrigerant system. Checking operating pressures and looking for signs of leaks.

After the visit you will know what was done, what was found and anything that should be planned for, such as a fan motor that is wearing out or a gasket that will need replacing soon.

How often should equipment be serviced?

There is no single answer. It depends on the equipment, how hard it works and the environment around it. A glass-door beverage cooler in a clean store needs less attention than a walk-in condenser next to a fryer exhaust, or a bakery case dusted with flour every day. Kitchens and bakeries generally need coils cleaned more often than retail spaces. We will look at your equipment and suggest a schedule that makes sense, rather than selling you more visits than you need.

Food safety and inspections

Ontario requires potentially hazardous food to be held at 4°C or colder, and inspectors from Toronto Public Health, Peel Public Health and York Region Public Health check cold holding during their visits. Well-maintained equipment holds temperature more steadily, and checking thermometers and alarms during maintenance gives you confidence that what the display says is what the product is actually experiencing.

Energy and equipment life

Clean coils, sealed doors and correctly set controls all reduce how hard a refrigeration system has to work. That means lower energy use and less wear on the compressor, which is usually the most expensive part to replace. When you add up a few avoided emergency calls, less stock thrown away and longer equipment life, maintenance usually costs much less than skipping it.

Simple things your staff can do

Between visits, a few habits help a lot:

  • Keep vents and air curtains on display cases clear. Do not stack product above the load line.
  • Close walk-in and glass doors promptly, and do not prop them open during deliveries any longer than necessary.
  • Keep the area around condensing units clear of boxes and debris.
  • Wipe door gaskets clean, and report any that are torn or not sealing.
  • Check and record temperatures at least once a day, and tell us early if they start to drift.

Equipment we maintain

We maintain the equipment families we supply and install, including multidecks, serve-over counters, glass-door coolers and freezers, island freezers, bakery cases, ice cream cases and walk-in coolers and freezers. If you have other equipment on site, tell us what it is when you get in touch.

Common questions

Can you maintain equipment you did not install? Tell us what you have when you get in touch and we will let you know.

Will maintenance stop every breakdown? No maintenance plan can promise that, but it greatly reduces the chance of surprise failures and catches most problems while they are still small.

Set up a maintenance plan

We serve businesses throughout the GTA from our base in North York, including Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Brampton and Markham. To set up planned maintenance, contact us or call +1 647-719-3171 with a list of your equipment. If something has already failed, see our repair and 24/7 emergency service.
