A walk-in built around your space

For most restaurants, grocers, butchers, caterers and food producers, the walk-in is where the stock lives. It has to be big enough for your deliveries, cold enough for what you store and reliable enough that you never have to think about it. Trust Cooling designs, supplies and installs modular walk-in coolers and freezers across the Greater Toronto Area, built to your footprint and ceiling height.

Because we also maintain what we install, we design walk-ins to be serviced. Refrigeration components are kept accessible, and the system is sized for the actual load rather than guessed.

What goes into a walk-in

Each walk-in is configured for the site, but the main parts are the same:

  • Insulated panels in 80, 100 or 150 mm thickness. Thicker panels are typically used for freezers and for rooms where energy efficiency matters most.
  • Doors, hinged or sliding and gasket-sealed, chosen for how product moves in and out. Hand carts, pallets and frequent trips all affect the choice.
  • Refrigeration pack sized for your load, covering the room volume, how much warm product comes in, how often the door opens and the conditions where the condensing unit sits.
  • Shelving in corrosion-resistant materials that stand up to cold, damp conditions.
  • Temperature monitoring with alarms that warn you before product is at risk.

Coolers are typically set between 0°C and +5°C and freezers between −18°C and −25°C. Combination rooms, with a freezer accessed through a cooler, are a common way to get both in one footprint. Full details are on the walk-in cooler and freezer product page.

Try it in 3D first

If you want to get a feel for sizes before talking to anyone, our 3D walk-in configurator lets you set the dimensions, choose doors and refrigeration, preview the room in 3D and download a PDF spec with an estimated load. Send the design with your quote request and we will use it as the starting point.

Questions we will ask about your site

A good walk-in installation depends on details that are easy to overlook. During the consultation, on site or from your drawings, we will look at:

  • Floor. Is it level? Freezers usually need an insulated floor to prevent frost heave in the slab below, and coolers may or may not, depending on the site.
  • Ceiling height and access. Panels have to fit through the building, and the room needs clearance above for refrigeration components.
  • Condensing unit location. Roof, rear wall or mechanical room. It needs airflow, service access and a sensible route for refrigerant lines.
  • Electrical. Whether your existing service can carry the new load, or whether your electrician needs to add capacity.
  • Drainage. The evaporator produces condensate that has to go somewhere, and freezer drain lines need protection from freezing.
  • Workflow. Where deliveries come in, how far product travels and which way the door should swing.

Raising these early prevents surprises on installation day. If other trades or your landlord need to be involved, we will tell you what they need to know.

The installation process

Projects follow the same four steps as all our work. Consult: we learn your space, products, volumes and timeline. Design: we lay out the room and select panels, doors and refrigeration. Install: our technicians assemble the panels, fit doors and shelving, install and connect the refrigeration, and commission the system. Support: planned maintenance and 24/7 emergency cover keep the walk-in running.

Before handover we bring the room down to temperature and check that it holds steady, so it is ready to load on day one. We also show your staff the basics, such as how to read the controller, what the alarms mean and how to keep the door and gaskets in good shape.

Looking after your walk-in

Walk-ins are reliable when they are maintained. Condenser coils need regular cleaning, evaporator drains need to stay clear, and door gaskets and heaters need checking. Our preventive maintenance covers this, and our repair service provides 24/7 emergency support if something fails.

Common questions

Can a walk-in go in a basement? Often, yes. Because walk-ins are built from modular panels, they can usually be carried in and assembled where a factory-built unit would not fit. The condensing unit location and refrigerant line route need some planning.

Can you replace the refrigeration on an existing walk-in? In many cases, yes. If the panels and doors are in good condition, new refrigeration can be a cost-effective upgrade. We will assess what you have.
